Make it Pretty: The Blog

Right now I'm toying around with some ideas for a blog makeover. Because, let's face it, for a blog with "Pretty" in the title, this one's not much of a looker! Z has a pretty sweet web design program that just got a blogger capability update, so I trying my hand at it. So far I've come up with two beautiful designs. One is very soft & "pretty". The other is a bit more refined & artsy. Personally, the artsy one has my heart. However, my family all seems to like the softer one. So.. since you're the readers that see this thing every day, I thought you should have some say. Here's a sample screen shot of each:

I think the second one looks more professional, and is more eye-catching, but my family seems to think that the raw brick and wood isn't "pretty", and therefore doesn't go with my whole title & theme. Personally, I think the brick is GORGEOUS. Who cares if it's old and weathered? That's where the beauty is.

The first one is a bit more classic, and simple. Maybe a little less overwhelming?? I don't know. Speak up my fellow design-loving, deal-stealing, creative ladies (and any men who may read this blog)!

Put Some Logs On the Fire..

.. or some fire on the logs, in this case! One night I was out in my parents' garage looking at their giant pile of firewood and inspiration struck. Most of the logs were split perfectly down the middle. So, I climbed around the pile til I found one with just the right amount of bark, and not a lot of dirt.

I figured that it wouldn't be too tough to make a candle holder.. and it turned out, I was right. All it took was a drill and some fun-looking drill bits. We started with the cone shaped one, then the 3/4 in. one, then the 7/8 in. one.

We made holes just the right side for a chunky tapered candle to fit into.

I scattered them back and forth along the length of the log.

If I were going to be using this on any scratch-able surface, I would have hot-glued felt onto the bottom. However, the fireplace I put it in is brick.. Not to much scratching going on there.

Here it is, all warm and fuzzy. Ten bazillion bonus points to the person who can find the elusive jolly rancher in this picture.

Right now it's working well with the harvest/fall decor.. however, I have plans for this little guy as we start whipping out the Christmas decor. (Yes, I'm okay with doing that now. Thanksgiving is over. lol)

Thanksgiving Decor

Well, since my last post was about how I'm still Thanksgiving-minded, I figured it only fitting that I give you a peek into what we're doing around here to get ready for it. For those of you who don't know, Z and I are living in my parents' basement 'apartment' right now while we're waiting to build our new house. We're closing on 55 acres of land soon, and will start work on the property in the spring. So, in the meantime, I'm helping my mom with projects here. My parents have a full eat-in kitchen as well as a formal dining room. So, I had to come up with two different centerpiece ideas.

I'm still editing each arrangements a little bit, so I'd love to hear your feedback on them. Each will have a burlap runner like this one, so try and picture them that way.

The first is a simple line up of pine cones, gourds, and candles. In the center, I bought some natural flower arrangement filler and circled it around a white pillar inside a simple glass vase.

To continue a little bit of pattern, I used the same white candlesticks. In the center, I placed a pretty little lantern and pine cones from our wedding atop my white cake stand.

This is the bay window in the dining room. I was going for a natural look this year with everything, and I think the textures here work pretty well.

A corner of the entryway console table houses my birch bark luminaries along with a few other accessories.

My mom has a fab bowl on the coffee table that I just threw some mini pumpkins and gourds in.

A few more touches and I think we'll be just about ready! Hope you all are enjoying the prep work for Turkey Day! :)

Am I The Only One??

So.. am I the only one in blog-land that's not hyped up on Christmas decor yet?? Maybe it's just me, but I like to take my holidays one at a time. Right now I'm all about Thanksgiving. Then, about a week after Thanksgiving, I'll move on to Christmas decor & planning. It just seems odd to me to have a Christmas tree up when I'm eating my turkey and stuffing. Seems like it would just be confusing which holiday I was supposed to be celebrating.

I don't know. Is it just me? Anyone else happen to feel the same way?

Pottery Barn

Thank you Pottery Barn for making these lovelies!!

They are just what I've been looking for!!

Remember my candle holder search?? I've finally found some options! Z Gallerie also makes these.

And, Lynn also shared these JC Penny options with me. Thanks Lynn!! (I couldn't get the picture to link here easily, so you'll just have to click on the link itself.)

While on the Pottery Barn website I spied these:

Pretty, but honestly, I'm loving the ones I made a little more. They're re-usable and can also function as a vase. And there's just something about knowing you did it yourself. :)

I love browsing the Pottery Barn website for inspiration. I can always count on something triggering an idea. What sites do that for you??
