Zane had a steady night, but began spiking fevers again this afternoon. They reached 102.9. Because they weren't entirely sure of the source, they decided to take the central line in his chest out and replace it with one in his groin. The lines can become infected and changing them out reduces that risk. We were just informed that the procedure is done and went smoothly. His blood pressure also went down a bit, so they want to make sure that he's not septic (infection in his blood). He had a lot of pain this morning when they did his dressing changes and the pain is requiring more medication than before. Greater medication can also compromise the airway, so they have decided it would be best for him to have the tracheotomy tomorrow. While he's still breathing well, this will make the dressing changes easier and hopefully more comfortable for him. The PA spoke with us and sounded very optimistic about everything. We've been assured that these things are relatively normal, but they can never be too cautious.
His parents felt comfortable enough to return to Ohio today. We pray that everything will remain stable and positive while they're gone, for their own peace of mind. Our prayers are never-ceasing for his strength & ability to fight off infection, as that is the greatest risk right now. The grafting for the right side of his back has been scheduled for next Friday, the 29th.
Thank you all so much for your support. It's been nine days now since the accident and we continue to receive many messages and comments. While we don't always have time to reply quickly, we read each and every one and we are SO, SO thankful. We are moved into an apartment now and will stay there for the duration. It is a nice place, and we are only .6 miles from the hospital- an easy walk. We're about to get some Chinese food, as I've had a craving all day. I'll continue to keep you all updated as we find out more.
