Weekend Getaway

I had plans to finish up a couple posts for you guys this weekend, but those plans got replaced by something I just couldn't say no to. The boyfriend (yes, we're married) offered to take me on a little getaway this weekend after seeing the week I've had at work. Let's just say.. I've been stressed to the point of tears several times this week.

So.. we're currently down on the coast of Maine doing a little sight-seeing and relaxing. More to come later on that.

Hope you're all enjoying a calming, relaxed weekend, putting this out of your mind..

and dreaming of spaces like this..

Reader Room: Laura's Fresh Living Room

When I stumbled upon Laura's post about her recent living room makeover I just knew you all would like to see it. So after twisting her arm (okay, not really- she was super nice), she agreed to let me pimp out her space here. She added some serious visual interest with some Ballard Designs shelving, and picked colors that were just so fresh & inviting.. check it out:

Don't you love it??

...
...

Yeah? Thought you would! :) You know that Pottery Barn art is a show-stopper. Swing by Laura's blog for all the details & source list.

Upholstered Headboard Inspiration

Next on my to-do list is a deeply-tufted upholstered headboard. Here's a few of my inspiration pieces (click on photo to be redirected to source):

I just ordered a few yards of this linen, from Pottery Barn.. can't wait to see it in person. Look for the finished product in a few more weeks!

Frugal Finds

Just wanted to share some pretty great items I've picked up recently..

The first is a cute little side table from HomeGoods. As most of you know, Zane and I are living in my parents' basement 'apartment until we have our new home built. It's set up kind of loft/studio style with all the rooms meshed into one. Our bed is right next to our leather couch, leaving little room for a nightstand. And for us, a nightstand is a must. We like to have a lamp that we can turn off from the bed (that may or may not have to do with the number of times I've run into things in the dark..), and we like having our cell phones there as well, as we use them as alarm clocks.

I've been on the hunt for a little table to fit in that space for a while. A couple weeks ago, while shopping in New Hampshire, I found "the one". I brought it home and was even more convinced. Wanna see?

Still a tight fit, but we're working with a small basement space here.. this is about the best it's gonna get. A lot of things aren't especially ideal, but it will be SO worth it once we have our custom-designed brand new house! Anyway, I digress..

Don't you love the mirrored top and the curvy legs?? Mirrored anything is always a plus in small spaces- it gives the illusion of more space. Here's a little closer look:

Oh, and the cost? 26 big ones. Me likey. :)

Yesterday I picked up this notebook too:

Doesn't it remind you of this Waverly Chippendale fabric? Love it.

It also has a handy pocket on the inside. I'm thinking it'll be perfect for paint chips & inspiration photos.

And lastly.. a little glimpse at a mini-project I'm working on.. any ideas what it is (the photo kind of gives it away)?

The New Bedding

Thank you all for your input on the duvet post! I've got some great new ideas & hopefully you all benefited from each other's answers as well.

So I promised pictures of the new bedding.. here they are!

Nate Berkus natural throw pillows w/ yellow snakeskin trim, DIY long pillow in my new fave fabric, & ikat stripe duvet & shams from Pottery Barn.

The geometric print for the fabric on the end of the bed is actually a duvet set I found at HomeGoods/TJ Maxx. Rather than stuffing it with a comforter, I ironed it flat and draped it across the bed to break up the stripes a bit. The shams also tie in the print in back of the other pillows.

And.. my new sheets just came in, but I don't have them on yet. Aren't they gorgeous??

Do You Duvet?

Up until recently, I'd never used a duvet cover. I'd shyed away from them simply because of the unknown. The only problem was.. I found myself wanting to switch up my bedding all.the.time. It's the nature of a designer that's taken over me- I'm always coming up with different ideas, and always changing things. Replacing our comforter or quilt every few months was not only getting expensive, I was running out of space to store big fluffy extra comforters. So.. I ordered a duvet. The first one I got was white cotton hotel-style with a geometric pattern that outlined the top of the bed. I wasn't a fan, and after a couple days, I sent it back. I was a little jaded by the experience, but decided to give duvets another go 'round anyway. I ordered this:

It's a yummy ikat pattern from Pottery Barn. We've had it for a few weeks now, and I LOVE it. The material is heavier- almost like canvas (I'll have to check to see exactly what it is..). I haven't had a single issue with it getting bunched up inside or shifting too much during the night. Definitely a keeper.

I think I'm pretty much a duvet convert. It's so much cheaper, and makes me feel much less guilty for changing things so often. I just picked up another duvet cover & matching shams that I'm using more or less as a coverlet draped across the end of the bed, and adding a little color behind my other pillows. Pictures soon, I promise.

Anyway, the whole point of this post was really to get your opinion on the whole thing. What is your bedding preference? Duvets? Comforters? Quilts? Coverlets? A combo of more than one? If you have duvets, what are your tips for keeping them in place? Do you put a down comforter inside or just one you already had sitting around? Please share!

Got the Blues?

Was I the only one in love with the rooms in the March 2010 issue of House Beautiful? The entire issue was dedicated to the color blue. I'm a big blue advocate myself, so the whole thing was just heaven. My favorite just might have been this beach house designed by Kim Coleman & Michelle Green. Feast your eyes:
{all photography by James Merrell}

This space is rather obviously nautical, but it's not your typical "froofy" (is that a real word?) seashells and rope beachy room. How amazing is that print on the wall??

I literally gasped the first time I saw this room. LOVE! So light, crisp, clean, but warm & welcoming. I think being in this room would keep me in a good mood no matter what... I think. ;) My favorite elements would have to be the wall color, that amazing coffee table, and the stunning chair in the bottom right corner. I'm dying to see the entire room, and not just this one shot.

Would you LOOK at that SINK?? Really, who wouldn't love to wash their hands in a giant seashell? I also love it paired with the mirrored vanity. The glamour of the vanity tones down the beachy-ness of the rest of the room.

I love this room for two reasons: that amazing chandelier and the high dossage of pattern mixing. I get a little obsessed with patterned fabric, and love when it all plays nice with each other. This room does just that. Zebra? check. Chevron? check. Funky lamp? check.

Again, beachy and glamorous. The perfect mix.

This room has a bit of a Pheobe Howard aesthetic to me. Beautiful in soft blues & tans.
Obviously, the orange stools are what pops out to the eye, but check out that mirror and chandelier! Absolutely gorgeous. The sconces & plant in the center also give the vignette a very outdoorsy feel. Perfect for a beach house.

The clock and console table don't look especially large-scale til you realize how little those chairs look in comparison.

I'm not personally a fan of lavender, but this room's pretty well done nonetheless.

Again with the pattern mixing.. it just.. works.

I had to save this photo for last. I.LOVE.IT. I won't get into all the details on what I love about this bedroom- I'll let the room speak for itself. Stunning. Simply stunning.

Things Are A'Changin!

I'm slooowwwly but surely working on spiffing up the look of the blog. My most recent venture has been my little navigation bar.

See it?? Wahoo! We're on our way to organization around here! The DIY link is NO WHERE near finished, but the rest is coming! There are a few other changes happening as well, but we'll save the other announcements for a later date. Seems whenever I'm looking for a particular post on a fave blog, it takes me forever to find it. I'm hoping this makes it a wee bit easier for you to navigate around the site.

Oh, and let's just ignore the oodles of fabric tabs I have open in the above screenshot. It's an obsession, people.

If any of you have suggestions on pages you'd like to see created, or some aspect that would make it easier on your eyes around here, please let me know! I'm totally open to suggestions!

Lattice Lust

Hi everyone! I'm back from our weekend in the White Mountains and it was just what the doctor ordered! Skiing, relaxation, and lots of retail therapy! :) I have several things to share with you, but until I get our photos edited, here's an amazing online deal that's just too good to pass up.

Ever since Nate Berkus started showcasing his line with HSN, I've been keeping an eye on it. I've also been looking at buying new sheets for a little while now.. and that want has become a need since the husband left our pillows and good pillowcases at the condo we stayed at this weekend. Imagine my delight when I spied these.

I just ordered a set in chocolate & cannot wait to get them! If you're in the market for some sexy new sheets, head on over!

Little Bitty Break

It's no secret around here that life has had me super busy lately. And when I'm not super busy I'm literally drained with no energy.. at. all. I've been feeling pretty bad for not keeping this blog up like I have in the past. So, I'm going to officially take a break for a few days, maybe a week. I have a lot going on the next couple days with work, and then thursday evening we'll be scooting on down to the White Mountains in New Hampshire for some skiing, shopping, and relaxation. I should be back by the beginning of next week. In the meantime, here are a few snapshots of where I'll be this weekend.

And, the place we'll be staying:

Oh, and for those of you that asked, the taupe & ivory fabric from my pillow covers in the last post is Waverly's Cross Section. There are a few colors of it here, for a suupperr cheap price. I definitely paid more than that when I bought mine, but hopefully one of you can strike a deal!
